School Council & Pupil  Leadership Groups

School Council

The purpose of the School Council is to get new ideas by consulting classes on things that will affect them in the school e.g. fundraising for charity, how to improve the school environment and outdoor play.

At the beginning of the year, each class votes for one representative to go on the School Council. Year 6 class representatives are given the additional responsibility of Chair and Secretary. Their role is to discuss ideas with their class and take responsibility for sharing them at School Council meetings, which are held regularly with the PSHE Lead, Mrs Hodgkiss. After School Council meetings, the class representatives report back to their classes.

As a School Council member, children need to be prepared to talk to a group, be a good listener, share ideas and be organised.

The school council has led initiatives such as developing the school's approach to recycling, organising charity events and writing the school prayer.

Pupil Leadership Groups

At Phil and Jim we encourage our pupils to take responsibility and learn that they can make a positive difference in both in their school community and beyond by being part of one of our pupil leadership groups. These groups give children the chance to contribute their thoughts and ideas to how the school is run and also provide the children with an active part in that process. They support the children to see how their choices and actions can impact the world around them for the good of their community. Aside from the school council, our pupil leadership groups comprise of:

  • Play detectives
  • Librarians
  • House captains

The purpose of playground detectives is to support other children to be able to join in with play during lunch times. At the beginning of the year, children in Year 5 and 6 can volunteer to be a playground detective.

Playground Leaders are trained and then allocated a zone on the playground to monitor and help to support their peers to access activities using equipment provided by the school. They may help to prepare equipment at the start of playtimes, take photos to document examples good play in action, help to develop new ideas for play or suggest resources which the children are keen for the school to acquire. They also support staff and their fellow pupils in ensuring that all of the equipment is stored away safely at the end of play sessions.

As a playground detective, children need to be able to talk confidently to a group, be a good listener, be patient, be caring, be organised and be committed to carry out their role throughout the year.

Librarians support Miss Handley in staffing and maintaining our wonderful school library throughout the school year. Year 6 pupils can apply to be librarians and receive training in how to look after the books, manage the administration and support younger pupils in accessing age appropriate texts which can support them to achieve reading challenges.

Year 6 pupils can apply to be house captains. There are two captains for each house: Kingfishers, Foxes, Badgers and Herons. House captains support the school in a number of ways, for example by helping to run events, being representatives of the school and speaking with visitors to the school site and helping younger pupils to take part in special occasions, for example sports days.
